HARRISON – Selectmen are considering imposing a 30-minute limit on parking spots in front of the Block building in Harrison Village.
They tabled a vote at last week’s meeting to fine-tune a description of exactly which parking spots will be affected by the time limit.
Reconstruction of Route 117, which is Main Street in Harrison Village, has prompted an end to the longstanding practice of diagonal parking in front of the Block, which has a general store and other retail spaces in its commercial storefront.
Since construction began this summer, the diagonal parking spots have been replaced by fewer parallel parking spots in front of the stores. Diagonal parking spots were added across the street, however, in response to residents who said the diagonal spots allow for more parking.
State traffic engineers removed the diagonal parking on the side of the highway nearest to the Block, citing safety concerns.
Town Manager Mike Thorne said there are about nine parking spots now on the Block side of the highway. Some are in front of the Caswell House Restaurant.
Selectmen don’t think all of the parking spots need to have a 30-minute limit, and want to correctly designate the spots where a parking limit is warranted, Thorne said.
