BRIDGTON – Bridgton Boogies, a series of seven Saturday early evening dances, has been scheduled for Bridgton’s Town Hall. The events begin at 6 p.m. with a potluck supper followed by dancing at 7 p.m.

“Get fueled and ready to boogie,” suggests Phil Gutekunst, Bridgton’s recreation director.

Andy Theriault, owner of Tempest Disc Jockey Services, said, “We’ll be happy to play any CD track you want to bring. Especially if it is for someone’s birthday.”

Preparations for the events began at a meeting several weeks ago by a group called Citizens Against The Cold.

“I’ve received a great kids’ book for Christmas, and I want to read it aloud during supper to the youngsters,” said George Bradt. “When I ran the senior dances I found that line dancing was popular with everyone,” recalls Bradt.

The three-hour events will also include two 15-minute periods for performances. “While Town Hall isn’t exactly Carnegie Hall, there will be plenty of opportunities for area groups to perform during these community events,” Bradt said.

Raffles will round out the evenings.

“Town Hall is great for dancing,” said Gutekunst. “Dancers have flocked to our beautifully polished wooden floors for nearly a century.”

Bridgton’s Recreation Department is a co-sponsor of the Bridgton Boogies.

The dances are slated for Jan. 8 and 22, Feb. 12 and 26, March 12 and 26, and April 9. They are free and open to everyone.

The Town Hall, on Route 302 on North High Street, is handicapped accessible, and there is plenty of parking.

Potluck dinner assignments are determined by the first letter of a person’s last name. Those with last names starting with an A through J are to bring a main dish. Those from K through Q are asked to bring a salad, and everyone from R through Z gets to bring a dessert.

Corporate sponsorships, which are inexpensive and fully tax-deductible, are available for each event. Individuals or companies may choose to sponsor a particular evening, or become a co-sponsor.

“In addition to funding, we need volunteers to help run the Boogies,” Bradt said.

Performers and people who want to help may call the Citizens Against The Cold headquarters hot line at (207) 647-2389 or write to [email protected].
