WOODSTOCK – Selectmen agreed Tuesday to ask the Maine Department of Transportation for a traffic survey near the Mollyockett Motel on Route 26.
Town Manager Vern Maxfield said a request for the survey was submitted by motel owner Tim Buck, who has asked for a lower speed limit there.
He plans to construct a restaurant at his facility to better serve his patrons.
“Right now the speed limit in that area is 55 miles per hour,” said Maxfield. Buck wants a 40 mph limit.
The state wants to look at the issue more since there will be a new entrance from Route 26 and the restaurant means a change of use for the business, he added.
“Selectmen tabled the issue earlier this month but have decided they will contact the state now to give Mr. Buck their support,” he said.
The Mollyockett is a busy roadside lodging place, especially during the ski season. Buck feels a restaurant will boost to his business further.
Also Tuesday it was announced that Comprehensive Plan Committee Chairman Norman Putnam continues to negotiate with the MDOT regarding a possible bypass to move Route 26 around Bryant Pond Village. As yet he has had no word from the state as to its interest.
In the fall representatives of the state highway department did not discount the possibility and the issue was left on the table for consideration.
The plan calls for moving the highway around the village from the top of Merrified Hill to Route 26 a short distance west of the roadside spring.
Selectmen, comprehensive plan committee members and many village residents say the bypass would make the village safer by eliminating heavy truck traffic and accidents.
Maxfield told the board he submitted the town’s completed comprehensive plan to the state for its approval.
