NORWAY – Eagles, loons and fish are the subjects of a presentation this week at the monthly meeting of the Mollyockett Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

Bill Hanson, a senior wildlife biologist with FPL Energy Maine Hydro of Lewiston, is to speak about the company’s ongoing eagle, loon and fish studies in an attempt to evaluate mercury levels.

Loons, Hanson says, are a good indicator of how much mercury is in the water behind FPL dams. The company operates most of the hydroelectric dams on the Androscoggin River.

Hanson has worked for the company for more than 20 years, studying the health of wildlife in and near the impoundments behind FPL’s dams.

According to the Androscoggin River Watershed Council, mercury is considered to be the most hazardous pollutant currently found in the river.

A dinner at 6 p.m. at Trolley House Food and Spirits, at 237 Main St. in Norway, precedes Hanson’s 7 p.m. presentation on Wednesday, Dec. 15. More information may be obtained by calling Dick Walthers at 743-7461.
