BETHEL – State transportation officials are to conduct a public meeting regarding planned improvements for the intersection of Parkway and U.S. Route 2 at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6, at Crescent Park School.

Parkway is a short road that connects Route 2 with Route 26. Traffic flows into the four-way intersection from three directions, two of which have two lanes, one being an overpass that curves down into the junction.

The Maine Department of Transportation has developed preliminary plans to improve the intersection.

On one side of the road, there is a pair of business entrances: Crossroads Diner and Deli and Rite-Aid Pharmacy. On the other side of the road is the Norway Savings Bank complex and Mallard Mart, a convenience store and gas station.

The intersection has been the scene of many wrecks, injuries and one death.

The proposed work consists of installing two yellow flashing beacons at the intersection, inserting three 18-inch-high islands in the travel way to control traffic flow, clearing and removing obstructions, and constructing a durable median to shelter Route 2 left turns.

Department representatives are to explain the proposed details, listen to concerns, accept comments and answer all questions before proceeding with final design.
