BUCKFIELD – Mail delivery services will be unaffected, or improved, by the reassignment of four Buckfield postal delivery employees to the Sumner Post Office.
Leanne Payeur, communications specialist for the U.S. Postal Service, said more space was needed at the Buckfield Post Office for processing mail.
The Buckfield Post Office will continue to be open to people for counter service with no change in hours. Buckfield addresses and zip codes will remain unchanged.
“It’s basically for safety and space concerns,” Payeur said. “It’s a streamlining of service.”
The Sumner Post Office will deliver mail for Buckfield as well as Sumner and Hartford, but Buckfield residents will still be able to pick up notice mail at the Buckfield office, headed up by Postmaster Ed Baxter.
Payeur said the change will benefit many Hartford residents, which will have the name of their town be part of their address for the first time.
“The residents of Hartford used to be split” between several post offices in the design of delivery routes, Payeur said.
The postal service is continuously evaluating delivery methods and making changes depending on increases or decreases in population, she said.
The postal service has basically outgrown the Buckfield Post Office, but is not at the point where it is considering an expansion of physical space, she said.
