PARIS – A collection of nearly 100 florist frogs, antique and contemporary, is on display at the McLaughlin Foundation during May.
The frogs belong to Cindy Drane of Hollis, who has been collecting frogs for more than 30 years. She began collecting as a young girl, adding to her mother’s collection.
Florist frogs are used in vases or bowls to organize floral arrangements. Flower stems are inserted into the spikes, wires or holes of the weighted frogs at the base of a vase in order to hold the flowers in place. In a ceramic vase or bowl, florist frogs may not be seen; but in glass containers they are visible and were therefore produced in decorative designs and materials. The exhibit includes glass, ceramic, plastic and frogs made of lead, brass, and bronze. While all are functional, the collection includes frogs that range from elegant to whimsical.
The exhibit is in the McLaughlin house daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
