Brian S. LeMaitre is accused of taking $600 worth of tools from his stepfather’s shed.
OXFORD – Oxford police said very little went right for accused burglar Brian S. LeMaitre on Saturday.

Phone calls from his stepfather and a pawn shop owner, and waves from some motorists led to the arrest of LeMaitre on charges of burglary, theft and operating without a license.

The 22-year-old Auburn man is accused of breaking into his stepfather Lyle Mercado’s shed on the Mechanic Falls Road in Oxford and taking $600 worth of tools, Oxford police Sgt. Theron Bickford said.

He was attempting to pawn them at Pa’s Tradin’ Co. on Route 26 in Oxford when shop owner Paul Cote received a call from Mercado advising someone might be in his shop trying to pawn the tools, the officer said.

“LeMaitre dumped the tools and ran out the door,” Bickford said.

Cote called the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office and told them LeMaitre was heading south on Route 26.

“I was driving north when he passed me in the area of Twin Town Homes,” Bickford said. “He abruptly turned right and tried to elude me by driving behind the business. By the time I turned around he was trying to come back out again.

“So, he ducked back in again,” Bickford said.

Bickford lost him as he drove around the homes, but passersby had pulled over on the road and waved and pointed to the direction LeMaitre traveled.

“I just followed the wave,” Bickford said. “I found him at National Wood Products, behind a trailer.”

Bickford said he was assisted in the arrest by David Heidrich of Oxford, who helped secure LeMaitre.

All of Mercado’s property was recovered.

LeMaitre was also issued a summons on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

He is scheduled to appear in 11th District Court in Paris on June 23, Bickford said. He was being held on a probation violation, as well as the other charges, he said.
