NORWAY – A lucky family has won a $4,000 cruise in a raffle to raise money for the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization.
And the best part is, they didn’t even have to buy a raffle ticket to win.
Preston Jump, program director for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western Maine, held the drawing at noon Monday at the Child Health Center in Norway. The winning ticket was one of several bought by the Swasey-Torrey Post 100 American Legion in Dixfield.
Jump said Legion Commander Marcel Martineau said the Legion members plan to donate the cruise to a deserving local family involved in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.
A total of 966 tickets were sold at $5 apiece to vie for the cruise, the cost of which is being underwritten by MeadWestvaco, Schiavi Enterprises and Oxford Networks. Jump said the tickets were sold throughout the Big Brothers Big Sisters service area, which includes the counties of Androscoggin, Oxford, southern Franklin and northern Cumberland.
The raffle raised $4,830 for the organization, which serves more than 1,000 kids through both community-based and on-site mentoring programs. Other fund-raisers held throughout the year to benefit the organization are Bowl for Kids Sake in late March-early April, and Dozer Days in the summer.
The cruise will be booked through Dube Carson of WagonLit Travel of Lewiston. The winner can book a cruise to a destination of their choice, with as many people as can be accommodated within the $4,000 limit.
