PARIS – An event-filled day is being planned for Sunday, Sept. 12, at the Maine Veterans’ Home at 477 High St., Paris.

At 2 p.m., there will be the traditional POW-MIA ceremony held in the multi-purpose room. This service is to honor the members of the U.S. armed forces who have been or are currently prisoners of war, and those servicemen who are missing in action. The annual ceremony includes reading the names of the servicemen of Maine who are POWs or MIAs, and lighting a candle in their honor.

There are musical selections and time for reflection for those who have been forcefully detained by an enemy government during active duty in war time, or who have never been accounted for.

“It is with pride and honor that we host this ceremony in our facility,” said Pat Young, administrator of the 90-bed home. “Some of our veteran residents here were POWs, and it is important to honor them as well as have a moment’s reflection for our soldiers who are still missing or being held hostage. We invite the community to join us for this service,” she said.

In addition, since Sept. 12 is Grandparents Day, there will be a dessert buffet from 2 to 4 p.m. with entertainment. Families and friends of residents of the home are invited to visit their loved ones, and enjoy dessert in the multi-purpose room. Tours of the facility will be available throughout the afternoon.
