NORWAY – A single-family home at 61 Orchard St. suffered smoke damage after a fire started in the basement.

No one was injured.

Fire officials got the call at about 3:45 p.m. Firefighters from Norway, Paris and Oxford responded.

The fire started because wires were piled up near the hot water heater, said Fire Chief Michael Mann.

Two or three people were home at the time, Mann said.

The two-story home sits on property that was the site of a large fire about 10 or 15 years ago, Mann said. An adjacent structure to the house was damaged and eventually torn down.

The building is owned by Norway Properties Inc. The previous owners, whom fire officials did not identify, were living there until a new house was built for them. Officials didn’t know where the family would be staying now.

Mann had no estimate of damage.
