ROXBURY – Special town meeting voters will finally get a chance next week to have a full Board of Selectmen, thanks to six people who are seeking two seats.

Voters will also decide if they should take more than $31,000 from surplus to reimburse the state for its overpayment of tree growth reimbursement money earlier this year and unanticipated office expenses.

The sudden abundance of candidates surprised outgoing board Chairman Mark Touchette and Selectman Deborah DeRoche at the board’s brief meeting Friday. Friday also was the deadline for nomination papers for the two seats to be returned.

Two attempts to get someone to run for the third selectmen seat have failed since April.

Candidates for the third seat – a 2-year term – are Zachary Cunningham, Timothy Derouche, John Sutton and Tom Beauchesne.

The remaining candidates, Michael Worthley and former selectman and Town Clerk Christine Howard, are running for Touchette’s remaining five-month term.

Touchette resigned last month to care for his son, who was seriously injured in a recent car accident. However, DeRoche talked him into staying until Friday to sign the warrant for a special town meeting to be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, in the municipal building on Route 17.

Besides electing two new selectmen, the warrant asks voters if they want to transfer $30,009.65 from the general revenue surplus account to pay the Maine Revenue Service for an overpayment of tree growth reimbursement.

Selectmen used the overpayment earlier this year to reduce taxes.

The last article seeks approval to take $1,348.48 from surplus to pay unanticipated costs associated with required mailings to property owners and advertisements by the Planning Board to the office supply account.
