BYRON – As of early Saturday evening, a Farmington man whom police consider to be armed and dangerous had yet to be captured, according to a state police dispatcher in Gray.

Kirk Hamel, 36, fled a state police traffic stop on Friday evening on Route 17 in Roxbury with his girlfriend and pre-teen son in a green Jeep, according to pursuing Trooper Paul Casey.

During the chase north toward Byron in heavy rain, speeds reached 90 mph, before Hamel took a left turn on an unimproved gravel road off Route 17 about two miles north of Coos Canyon.

The road dead-ends on the east flank of Pleasant Mountain.

Police using two four-wheel-drive cruisers drove in on the road and found the Jeep about a mile in. But, there were no signs other than footprints, of Hamel, his girlfriend, Angela Ames, who is in her 30s, and Hamel’s son.

A ground search by police and a Franklin County Sheriff’s Office tracking dog was unsuccessful.

Casey described Hamel as being 5 feet, 11 inches tall, 185 pounds, with blue eyes, short blond hair and a mustache. Ames stands 5 feet, 3 inches tall, weighs 115 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes.

Casey encouraged people in Byron to be wary of strangers, especially a man, small woman and young boy, who may be traveling together.
