RUMFORD – Selectmen are expected to huddle behind closed doors three times Thursday night to take up two Fire Department issues and one involving the Police Department.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Municipal Auditorium.

Interim Town Manager Len Greaney said the board will meet with police Chief Stacy Carter to discuss the police union contract because two positions were eliminated as a result of budget cuts. Greaney said the union has approved changes. Now, selectmen must also approve the contract changes.

A closed session is scheduled with Mexico fire Chief Gary Wentzell and Rumford interim fire Chief Richard Coulombe to find out if Wentzell will accept the chief’s position for Rumford.

Greaney said if Wentzell turns down the part-time position, the the town may consider searching for a full-time chief.

The board also will act on a grievance filed by the Fire Department and denied by Greaney. Details were not provided.

In other matters, Greaney will provide an update on public works projects, including work on the trail near the Androscoggin River, as well as recent activities by the new Economic Development Committee.

The board will also decide whether to move the River Valley Chamber of Commerce administrator’s office from upper Congress Street to the information center on Bridge Street, act on a town hall rental policy, appoint a town lawyer, and decide whether to extend the Eagles’ liquor license to the outside parking lot during a planned car show later this month.

A discussion will also be held on the status of the town manager. Greaney agreed to remain in the position at least until March, and perhaps until the end of the fiscal year. Some people want to share a town manager with neighboring Mexico, and others want to advertise for a full-time, permanent person.
