RUMFORD – Anyone interested in working toward the creation of a skateboard park for area young people is encouraged to attend an organizational meeting at 3 p.m. today at the Parks Commission office at Hosmer Field.

Tim Gallant, parks superintendent, said in a news release that about $28,000 must be raised to build the park. He said the commission has already set aside a section of the Hosmer Field complex for the skateboard park.

“A skateboard park is an expensive facility and people aren’t going to be willing to put their money and time toward something unless it seems worthwhile. What we need to do is to show the community that it is worthwhile and will build up a good image and show that there is a need for a skateboard park,” he said.

He hopes to get parents and businesses involved in the process.

Those attending the organizational meeting and subsequent meetings will decide on a logo and name for the skateboard park and for the committee.

Once organized, he said the committee will make a presentation to the Board of Selectmen to gain its support.

Those interested in becoming involved may call Gallant at 364-7758, or just show up at the meeting.
