MEXICO – Pending the outcome of negotiations with town officials, a physical fitness business inside the municipal recreation center may not have to close or relocate this weekend when its lease expires.

Last week, Town Manager John Madigan met with Generations Health and Fitness owner Daniel Lemay to work out a plan to keep the facility open at 15 Recreation Drive. It opened last September in the Mexico Recreation Center after relocating from Carlton Avenue.

“When the weather got nice, people stopped going,” Madigan said by phone Tuesday afternoon. “If customers aren’t supporting it, he’s not taking in any revenue. Dan’s got to rethink his business.”

Calls Tuesday to the fitness center were not returned. A family member contacted by phone at Lemay’s Peru home on Tuesday afternoon said he was away at a softball game.

A message posted last week on the Web site stated that the business was exploring options that included possibly closing or returning to its former location when its lease expires on Saturday, June 30. That message was removed before Tuesday.
