Oxford County Sheriff’s Deputy Justin Brown brought one of the county’s two new 2007 Ford Expedition four-wheel drive patrol vehicles to Rumford on Friday afternoon. Sgt. Matt Baker, who patrols the southern end of the county, has the other SUV. “A lot of people are doing double takes when they see it,” Brown said. “We’ve needed them for a long time. Four-wheel drive will make it safe in the winter for us.” Sheriff Wayne Gallant said Friday that he got the SUVs to better enable deputies to patrol the county’s rural dirt roads and in the White Mountain National Forest coverage area. In the past, cruisers would get stuck, or officers would have to hitch rides, walk, or take personal vehicles into remote crime or accident scenes or to check on property.
