RUMFORD – Selectmen on Thursday officially appointed Rumford police Lt. Mark Cayer as acting chief until a new town manager is in place.

Cayer assumed responsibility as chief a few weeks ago when Chief Stacy Carter was asked to serve as interim town manager.

The board is currently conducting second interviews of two finalists for the town manager position and hopes a new person begins work within the next few weeks.

Cayer will receive approximately $140 more a week while he serves as acting chief, Carter said.

In other matters Thursday, resident Len Greaney requested $2,000 from the town to go toward the cost of a Vietnam veterans monument honoring Oxford County soldiers who died during that war. It is scheduled to be dedicated May 19 at Rumford’s Veterans Memorial Park.

The board placed the matter on its agenda for the April 19 meeting.

Greaney said about $4,500 of the $11,500 necessary has been raised so far.

In other veterans matters, Greaney also requested about $16,000 for the repair of veterans’ gravestones in the town’s cemeteries.

Board Chairman Jim Rinaldo said funds have been placed in the municipal budget. Residents will act on the request at the June 12 referendum, and if passed, will be available July 1.

After a closed session, the board approved a two-year loan from the town’s revolving loan fund to Patrick Hamner for $8,000 that will be used to bring an apartment building on Knox Street up to code.

Carter said the money is loaned at 4 percent annual interest.

Another loan fund request, submitted by local pastor and businessman Joseph Roberts, was denied until additional financial information was submitted. Roberts is asking for $45,000 to help start a shuttle service and a locksmith and security system business.
