RUMFORD — Firefighters from Rumford and Mexico, and two Med-Care Ambulance crews were called to help evacuate eight residents from the east wing of Rumford Community Home when a sprinkler head burst Friday.

The leak flooded that section with up to 3 feet of dirty water, which firefighters were busy removing once electricity was restored, Rumford fire Chief John Woulfe said at the scene.

There were no injuries.

Four patients at the nursing home on J. F. Kennedy Lane were moved into empty rooms in the building’s west wing. Four others, whose rooms were heavily damaged and who require specialized equipment not available in the other wing, were being taken by ambulance to Rumford Hospital to stay until they could return, Woulfe said.

Contractors arrived within 30 minutes of the incident and began looking at what would be needed to repair the leak and building.

Damage estimates were not immediately available.
