PERU – A public hearing will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 10, at the Peru Elementary School to discuss articles aimed at improving town roads.

Voters will decide at the March 19 referendum whether to:

• establish a capital reserve account for road improvements and authorize selectmen to spend from it;

• authorize the treasurer and selectmen to issue up to $400,000 in bonds;

• raise $8,320 to pay the first year’s interest; and

• authorize selectmen to enter into road work contracts.

If approved, the measures would pay for rebuilding Pleasant Street for $115,000, rebuilding a portion of Main Street connecting to Dickvale Road from the area of the Post Office to McDonald’s farm for $140,000; paving two sections of Gammon road for $40,000, Ridge Road (Main Street to Merrill farm) for $38,000, Peru Center Road for $24,000, and Valley Road (Tozier to Holland Road) for $20,000.

The money would also pay for replacing the manhole system in the area of Main Street by Mrs. B’s Store for $50,000.

If all articles pass, the town budget would be $612,422.79. Last year it was $600,610.80.

The March 19 referendum will include the annual warrant articles, replacing the annual opening meeting voting.
