RUMFORD – A new Chinese restaurant will open its doors here on New Year’s Day.
China Town Restaurant at Oxford Avenue and Cumberland Street will offer a chance to sit and enjoy a meal, or take it out. The doors open at 9:30 a.m.
Jen Yang and her mother, Xiu Su, are co-owners of the business. Yang’s father, Xing Yang, will help in the enterprise.
Yang moved to Rumford from Lewiston about six months ago. Since then, the family has been renovating the former laundry into a restaurant. The three had previously worked at a Chinese restaurant in Lewiston. They emigrated from a small Chinese town about an hour west of Hong Kong 10 years ago.
Rumford seemed like a good place to establish a new restaurant. “There are lots of houses and apartments around,” said Yang of the area.
Besides the three family members, Yang said three hostesses and a cook will be hired to help with the business, which will be open seven days a week.
The family will finish decorating the restaurant during the weekend, setting up plants, and generally preparing for business.
Yang has worked in Chinese restaurants since she came to the United States.
“It’s good to cook Chinese food so more people can learn about it,” she said.
The business is scheduled to be open from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday.
