RUMFORD – Selectmen set a series of presentations for the next three regular board meetings to learn about the services provided by the police, fire and public works departments.

Board Chairman Jim Rinaldo said Friday that the presentations will help the board learn whether townspeople are satisfied with the services they receive, or whether they want some changes.

Once all reports are presented, he said one or more workshops or public informational meetings will be held in early 2007. The project will be used as part of the municipal budget development for fiscal year 2007-08.

He said the number of employees and level of services in the three departments have remained about the same through the decades while the town’s population has declined from a peak of about 10,000 to the current 6,400.

“What do the people want?” he asked.

Each department operates on a budget of about $1 million annually.

He wonders if most people are happy with what they receive.

Fire Chief John Woulfe will make the first presentation on Nov. 16. He will be followed by police Chief Stacy Carter on Dec. 7, then public works Director Andy Russell on Dec. 21.
