RUMFORD – A family squabble turned violent early Saturday evening at a Maine Avenue apartment when a Lewiston man was slashed atop the head with a large knife, Rumford Police Sgt. James Bernard said.
Police arrested Tony Leonard, 36, of 25 Maine Ave., on charge of aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, a Class B felony, and on an Androscoggin County warrant for failure to appear for sentencing.
Leonard is charged with assaulting Leonard Alan Scott Mason, 28, who, according to Bernard, was found bleeding on the street outside the apartment. He was taken to Rumford Hospital, where several stitches and staples were used to close the wound, Bernard said. He was then released
Police also arrested, Leonard’s girlfriend, Jana Mason, 27, of the same address, who was charged with disorderly conduct and violation of conditions of release. She was freed on $1,000 unsecured bail, and is to be arraigned on July 5 in Rumford District Court.
The victim was visiting his sister, Jana Mason, when a fight erupted. Bernard declined to give specifics, citing the continuing investigation.
Bail for Leonard, which was set at $5,000 cash on the assault charge, was denied due to the warrant, Bernard said. Leonard is to be arraigned on July 20 in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris.
Leonard, who moved to Rumford from Lewiston last month, was taken to Oxford County Jail in Paris to await arraignment, Bernard added.
