RUMFORD – The annual Veterans Day commemoration takes place at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at Mountain Valley High School.
Event organizer Bob Dube, senior vice-commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1641, said plans are under way for the MVHS band to play a variety of patriotic marches, a salute to the nation’s military services, and other music. The Rumford Association for the Advancement of the Performing Arts chorus, better known as RAAPA, will also sing a selection of patriotic songs.
Young people from the local Civil Air Patrol group will provide the color guard.
Dube said all veterans who will march into Muskie Auditorium at the high school as part of the event should meet there at 9:30 a.m.
Rep. John Patrick, D-Rumford, and Sen. Bruce Bryant, D-Oxford, will be among the speakers, and the Rev. Angelo Levasseur will be one of the local clergy members who will lead prayers.
All adult participants, along with all veterans, are invited to lunch at the VFW post after the celebration. Young participants are invited to lunch at American Legion Post 24 on Congress Street.
Dube said the names of more than 40 deceased veterans from the River Valley area will be read at the special Veterans Day memorial service on Sunday at St. Athanasius and St. John Catholic Church. The service begins at 9:30 a.m.
