DIXFIELD – A Millinocket man, alleged to have driven to Rumford to buy marijuana, was arrested Sunday on his way home, Oxford County Cpl. Chancey Libby said Monday.
After reportedly finding 4 ounces of processed pot, Libby charged Philip R. Groves, 54, with unlawfully furnishing marijuana, and impounded the marijuana, $200, and Groves’ car, a 1987 Toyota.
Groves was taken to Oxford County Jail in Paris, where he posted $200 cash bail and was released. He is to be arraigned on Dec. 6 in Rumford District Court.
Citing teamwork by Rumford, Mexico, Dixfield and Oxford County police, and Maine Drug Enforcement Agency agents, Libby said Rumford police received and shared a drug intelligence tip that Groves had come to town to buy marijuana.
Libby arrested him at 5:11 p.m. on Route 2 opposite the Maine Department of Transportation Division 7 headquarters.
Libby said Groves “claims he paid $900 for it. Marijuana here usually goes for between $130 to $150 an ounce, so I think he got took,” Libby said.
Police are continuing their investigation into where and from whom Groves reportedly got the marijuana.
“It’s unusual for someone to come here from there. That’s a long way to go, just to get some dope. In Millinocket, I figure there’s dope available on every street corner,” Libby said.
