RUMFORD – A fire of undetermined origin Monday night resulted in radio station WTME’s going silent just after 8 p.m. The station was still off the air at midafternoon Tuesday.

Rumford Deputy Fire Chief Richard Coulombe said two engines and 10 volunteers from the Rumford Fire Department, and an engine and several volunteers from the Mexico Fire Department, responded to the call at 8:13 p.m. on the Franklin Annex Road. He said he immediately turned off the power to the transmitter.

He said the floor of the 10- by 20-foot building sustained a few hundred dollars worth of damage. He said a visit by a representative of the State Fire Marshal’s Office on Tuesday morning did not determine the cause of the fire.

Jeremy Rush, program director for the Gleason Media Group based in Norway, owners of the transmitter, said the company had engineers at the site Tuesday morning to try to determine the cause of the fire. He expected the radio station, which serves the Rumford area, to be back on the air later in the day.

Another spokesman for the media group said all the equipment in the building appears to be in working order.
