CANTON – The Canton Volunteer Fire Department held its fourth annual Summer Fest on Saturday, with an auto show added this year.

By far, the most popular activity was the firemen’s muster, in which two teams moved a ball along a wire with force from the water hoses. In the hot and humid weather, the fire department participants were eager to take part. The firemen gave the kids a break by giving them a shower as well.

Fire Chief Wayne Dube said he was pleased with the turnout, especially for the car show. There were 45 vehicles represented, and trophies were given out in all of the 19 classes represented. The Fireman’s Choice, which was the largest trophy, was presented to Mike Simmons from Waldoboro for his fire-red 1956 Chevrolet truck.

Whitney Masonic Lodge 167 hosted a chicken barbecue, and music for the afternoon was offered by the Off the Hill Band. Afternoon activities included a husband-wife wheelbarrow race, Canton Jail and pie-throwing contests. The children’s activities included a pinata, a moon bounce, a magic show and games. A craft and flea market was held in the municipal building.
