MEXICO – A duck on the run caused a two-vehicle wreck late Friday afternoon on Route 2.

There were no apparent injuries. Med-Care Ambulance medics examined two passengers who complained of pain but did not want to go to a hospital.

Mexico Patrolman Dean Benson said the accident happened at 5 p.m. at 297 River Road, also known as Route 2.

Driver Margaret Booth, 62, passenger Kenneth Davignon, 56, and a sheltie dog were headed east in a 2002 Ford Focus. Benson said Booth and Davignon, both of Bristol, Vt., were headed to Nova Scotia for a vacation.

Traveling behind them in a 2001 Chevrolet pickup truck towing an all-terrain vehicle on a flatbed trailer was driver James White, 37, of Dixfield, and passenger Lyle White, 67. They also were traveling with a sheltie dog.

“Apparently, a duck ran into the road, she slammed the brakes on, and he could not stop in time and rear-ended her,” Benson said.

The Ford went off the highway, narrowly missed a utility pole, jumped the curb and stopped on the lawn at 300 River Road.

The ATV landed in the road.

Benson said Davignon complained of neck pain; Lyle White of stomach pain.

A Mexico firefighter and Oxford County Sheriff’s Deputy Chancey Libby directed traffic.

Benson said the Ford was totaled, and the truck sustained an estimated $4,000 damage.

A nearby resident took the vacationing couple and their dog into his home.

The duck fled.
