MEXICO – Fire crews were at the scene of blaze on Main Street late Wednesday night after a home was reported in flames about 7 p.m.

Nobody was hurt in the fire, but the historic building at 231 Main St. was extensively damaged after flames burned through the roof. Firefighters from Mexico and Rumford knocked down the fire before it could spread beyond the third floor, a fire official said.

The building is a duplex, according to Jack Arsenault of the Mexico Fire Department. None of the occupants was hurt, and fire crews kept flames from spreading to nearby buildings.

The duplex is one of several on Main Street with the same design, Arsenault said. The oddly shaped roof initially made reaching the source of the fire difficult, he said.

Fire crews remained at the scene for hours after the blaze was first reported, snuffing out hot spots and beginning an investigation into the cause. The extent of damage was not immediately known.
