ANDOVER – Selectmen discussed what to do with leftover Bicentennial Celebration money, and talked about road paving at Monday night’s meeting.
The town celebrated its 200th birthday June 18-20 last year.
Selectmen Chairwoman Trudy Akers said that between $3,000 and $4,000 remained in the account. She said a request had been made to put the money in the town hall fund.
But, Selectman David Percival thought it should go toward the town’s annual Olde Home Days festival.
“It’s the same thing, but the bicentennial comes along a little less frequently,” Percival said.
Akers said that some of the money could be used to purchase some photo albums to hold photographs from the bicentennial event.
The board agreed to look into that, then tabled further discussion to a future meeting.
Road Commissioner Marshall Meisner said the time had come to begin chip-sealing some of the town’s high-traffic roads that had been flex-paved recently.
He suggested that the town could decide to chip-seal six miles of the East Andover Road or do it in sections, rather than use hot-top mix pavement.
“Hot-top’s gone right out of sight,” Meisner said. “To hot-top four-tenths of a mile by 20-feet wide and reclaim, that’s just under $50,000.”
He said chip seal is selling for an estimated $13,000 a mile.
The board asked him to inquire about the exact cost and return with an answer at the next meeting so that the issue can be added to the March town meeting warrant.
