RUMFORD – Kylie Marie Hutchinson entered the world at 9:40 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, becoming Rumford Hospital’s first baby of the new year.

Her dad, Philip Hutchinson, was by her mother’s side.

Dr. Dieter Kreckel delivered 7-pound, 6-ounce Kylie, almost 15 hours after her mother, Tasha Johnson, 19, entered the hospital. Dr. John Kroeger and registered nurses Joette Carlton and Wendy Hebert assisted.

Hutchinson, 19, a Dunkin’ Donuts employee, wasn’t sure yet just how he felt about being a new father.

“It still hasn’t fully hit me,” he said.

He has taken the last four days off to be with Johnson.

He said he was surprised how hard it was for Johnson to give birth.

“It was a lot different than seeing it on TV,” he said.

Johnson said the baby is named for a friend.

Mother and baby go home to Holyoke Avenue in Rumford on Tuesday. Hutchinson’s sister, Felicia Hutchinson, and mother, Sheryl Conant, will help out for a few days. Kylie is also the granddaughter of Sheryl Jackson of Rumford and Richard Johnson of New Hampshire.

Hutchinson and Johnson attended Mountain Valley High School.

As the first baby of the new year, Kylie and her parents received dozens of gifts from area businesses, ranging from flowers and food to gift certificates, a new hairdo for mom, and savings bonds.
