MEXICO – Hundreds of big, black, bulging bags decorated with bright ribbons are piled upstairs at the Free Store.

Pretty dolls, basketballs, colorful mittens, games and hundreds of other presents wait to be wrapped, then placed in more big, black bags.

Santa’s Helpers are busy.

For more than 20 years, Dot Sanchas has coordinated this Christmas tradition to assure that every child in the area will have something under the tree from Santa. This year is no different.

She can’t do it alone, though. She depends on the generosity of individuals, businesses and organizations who give money and new toys or clothing, and on others who make it a major part of their lives to create fun or essential items all year long for giving at Christmastime. Four or five volunteers also work hard, shopping for Santa, wrapping the presents and placing them in the bags.

Sanchas said many “angels” help out, such as a woman in Mexico who knitted 150 pair of mittens this year, or Earl and Lelia Hanmer. He builds wooden toys, she sews doll clothes and blankets.

About 200 families are helped each Christmas, representing about 500 children from infant to age 12. Distribution of the “Santa sacks” will continue for another week or so.

Families who want to take advantage of Santa’s Helpers must sign up by Dec. 13, by calling 369-3677, or by visiting the Free Store.

And donations of money or unwrapped new toys are still needed and welcomed, said Sanchas.

Each child receives new underwear, mittens and hat, and one or more toys. Sometimes new boots, jeans and other clothing, depending upon the need, are also included.
