Dear Sun Spots: I attended Holy Family School from 1964 to 1969 and was there when the school opened its hot lunch cafeteria beneath Holy Family Church. The cafeteria staff provided some of the best cafeteria food that I have ever eaten. In particular, they made homemade whole wheat bread rolls and chocolate cake with a soft, white vanilla icing that were just fabulous. Would anyone happen to have these original recipes from the cafeteria? Even if the recipes are for large quantities, I would like to have them and then work on them to reduce them to family-size quantities. Answer: In the past, we have recommended contacting the SHARECenter in Auburn, a non-profit organization that collects materials from businesses and industry to be reused by schools or other programs. Contact Director Diane Doe at (207) 795-0972 for information on donations and hours or e-mail at sharecenter@auburnschl.edu.

The St. Jude’s Ranch for Children will also be accepting all-occasion used greeting cards for their recycled card program. At the time of publication, they had not provided an updated mailing address to send donations to, so we’ll publish it as soon as we receive it.

There are also many crafts you can do at home with your old greeting cards. To make a votive or tea light candle holder, cut out a small picture from an old card, cover the back of the picture with glue and glue it to a baby food jar. Put a rubber band around the jar to hold picture in place until the glue dries. Remove the rubber band and, using a paintbrush, cover the outside of the jar with glue. Sprinkle salt over all of it to make the jar glisten. Let dry. Tie a piece of decorative ribbon around the rim and place candle inside.

To make a storage box for photos or to give gifts in, paint the outside of a shoe box with any color you’d like; red or green would be great if using to give a Christmas gift. Let the paint dry. Next, cut out the picture or scene on the front of several greeting cards. Arrange them on the sides and top of the shoe box to cover as much of it as possible. You can also try to create scenes with the pictures. Glue them into place and let the glue dry completely.

Using watered-down glue, paint over the box to seal it. You should use approximately 1 part glue to 1 part water. You can also use any other decoupage medium. Apply two to three coats, making sure each coat dries completely before adding the next.
