AUBURN – A Laurel Avenue man was behind bars charged with assaulting and forcibly detaining his girlfriend the night before.

Carl Harrington, 21, of 29 Laurel Ave., was arrested on charges of kidnapping, assault, refusal to submit to arrest and two counts of criminal threatening.

Police were called to Harrington’s apartment awhen a neighbor heard screaming. When officers arrived, they found Harrington and the woman there.

“It was revealed she had been threatened and assaulted,” said Auburn police Sgt. Scott Watkins. “When she attempted to leave, he physically restrained her.” Harrington continued to attack the woman once she was restrained, police said.

Police who responded to the apartment spoke with both Harrington and the woman and found probable cause to charge Harrington with kidnapping and other crimes. Watkins said Harrington struggled with the officers as they tried to take him into custody. That led to the additional charge of refusal to submit.

Turner: New truck advance

TURNER – After weeks of investigating possible replacements for a broken 1982 firetruck, Fire Chief Steve Fish and Assistant Chief Sean Arsenault are recommending the town buy a new truck.

Fish told selectmen that what’s available for used equipment “isn’t a whole lot better” than what the town has and would come with its own set of mechanical problems.

A new truck would cost $221,000, without “a lot of bells and whistles,” Fish said. With $53,000 available in the Fire Department reserve account, that would leave a bill for the citizens of $168,000.

“That is a lot of money,” Fish said. “We really do know that, but we don’t see any alternatives.”

The current truck is valued at $8,000 to $10,000, and a minimum of $15,000 to $18,000 would be needed to get it in working order. But, Fish pointed out, that would get it working, not necessarily working well. He said that didn’t seem to make a lot of sense to him.
