RUMFORD – Fireworks will fly over the Androscoggin River’s reflection pool Sunday night just as they have for many years.
The display caps off four days of events planned in the downtown Rumford area. Although a carnival won’t be part of this year’s Moontide and July Fourth activities, everything else will be, plus a little more.
A new Moontide Water Festival Committee has been lining up music, crafts show, food vendors, and such events as a rubber ducky race, a stilt dancer, a talent contest, and dozens of other activities.
Original plans had called for a four-day carnival on Congress and Exchange streets, but a last minute cancellation by the company changed all that. The committee’s share of money raised from the carnival has helped pay for the fireworks in the past. To make up the difference, committee members and others have been canvassing local businesses, individuals and towns for donations.
The fireworks display will cost $20,000, and $15,000 has been raised toward it. In the past week between $4,000 and $5,000 more has been raised toward the remaining $10,000 needed to pay for the fireworks and other costs associated with the festival.
Committee Chairman Matt Plante said he expects the fireworks show, billed as the largest in the state, to be just as long and colorful as it has been during the past few years.
But before all that happens, three days of music, dance and comedy will be performed on stage at Veterans Green at the foot of Congress Street.
A detailed list of events, times, and places is available at the Moontide office at 25 Congress St.
On the Fourth, a section of Route 108 from Canal Street to River Street will be closed. Traffic will be rerouted.
Thousands of people are expected to attend the daytime events and the fireworks display on July 4th. Parking is available at the Eagles Club, the American Legion and on-street throughout the area.
