DIXFIELD – Voting on three candidates running for two vacated three-year seats on the Board of Selectmen was very close after Tuesday’s polls.

Tony Carter got the most votes – 237 – winning one seat, while Bettina Martin, who received 227 votes, won the second seat.

Raymond “Tiny” Carlton, 53, received 223 votes.

Carter, 44, grew up in Dixfield. He is employed as a maintenance general superintendent for pulping and utilities at MeadWestvaco Corp. in Rumford.

Citing his business and management background, and a desire to bring about changes for the better, Carter sought a selectman’s seat to help resolve ongoing issues such as the ones facing the Water Department and the six years of tax rate increases.

Martin, 66, who was Farmington’s finance director for 12 years and is now retired, has lived in Dixfield for 35 years.

She currently serves Dixfield as a Finance Committee member.

Martin sought a board seat because she wanted to improve employee relationships and accountability for all areas of municipal government. She had said she would strive to better inform residents about town business.

The two seats became available when incumbent Chairman Hugh Daley and Selectwoman Sandra Buchanan decided not to seek re-election.

Running unopposed for two three-year SAD 21 school board seats, Chairwoman Barbara Chow was re-elected with 301 votes, as was incumbent Director Shelly Harlow with 326 votes.
