River Valley area churches are offering opportunities to worship during Holy Week, including a few events that differ from the traditional.

One is offered by the Mexico First Baptist Church. From 1 until 5 p.m. on Good Friday, the church will be open for people to meditate on Christ’s death on the cross.

A wooden cross will be displayed and nails provided for each family to pound into the cross to commemorate the belief that every human is responsible for crucifying Christ.

Also on Good Friday, stations of the cross will be portrayed twice by people from St. Athanasius and St. John Catholic Church and school, at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The Rev. Al Jacques, pastor of the Catholic churches in Rumford, Mexico and Dixfield, said the film “The Passion of the Christ” has helped some children to more closely follow the liturgy during Mass and communion.
