MEXICO – A spokeswoman for Dexter Supply confirmed Monday that an offer has been made to buy the Mexico store opened last summer on Route 2 by Kelly Dexter.

Dexter owns building supply stores in Wilton, Strong and Mexico.

Melinda Bickford, located in the Wilton store, said the Mexico business closed on Friday in anticipation of the sale.

“It’s not a definite, definite until the scheduled closing on the property,” she said.

The closing, with former Puiia Hardware and Home Center co-owner Tom Puiia, is set for March 11.

Puiia’s hardware, a longtime, popular business in Rumford, closed 2 years ago. It had most recently been owned by Tom and John Puiia and was sold to Hammond Lumber Co., based in Belgrade with stores in six central and western Maine towns. The site remains vacant at the corner of Prospect Avenue and Bridge Street.

Bickford said business has been good at the Mexico Dexter Supply store.

“It is a case of a good offer,” she said. “It’s business.”

If for some reason the deal isn’t sealed, she said Dexter would reopen the Mexico store within a few days.

Tom Puiia couldn’t be reached for comment.
