CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Someone gained entry into a Route 27 store Sunday night by tearing through a section of wall, police Chief Scott Nichols said.

After cutting through the back wall of Ayotte’s Country Store, the thief got into the safe and removed $5,000 in cash, he said. Nichols estimates damage at $5,000.

The incident apparently took place after 8 p.m. Sunday when store, which is across from the airport, closed. An employee came in Monday at 5:30 a.m. and discovered the break-in.

“The store is open and the good part is we have insurance and nobody got hurt,” said co-owner John Beaupre on Monday.

Someone cut a hole in the wall large enough to walk through, Beaupre said.

Owners Beaupre and Bob Thomas would appreciate any information on the incident that anyone can give, he said. Beaupre may be reached at 235-2805 or 235-2443.

Police were able to collect some evidence at the scene and are continuing their investigation, Nichols said.

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call Carrabassett Police Department at 235-3200.
