SAD 43 may get additional laptops

RUMFORD – Laptops and a new after-school and summer school position will be the major topics of Monday’s SAD 43 board meeting, the final one before school starts Sept. 1.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the library of Mountain Valley High School.

Superintendent Jim Hodgkin said the board will be asked to approve spending up to $105,000 from the district’s technology bond for the rental of 350 laptops for use by freshmen, sophomores and high school teachers.

The district is taking part in the state’s laptop initiative. If the board approves the expenditure, all students in grades seven through 10 would have laptops to assist in their class work.

The board will also be asked to approve a new athletic director job description and the creation of a new position that will coordinate the River Valley Community Learning Center. The center, which will provide after-school and summer school academic and recreational opportunities for at-risk students in Grades 3 through 8, is funded by a federal grant.

The athletic director’s position, which has been changed to full-time, would include coordination of all sports from Grades 6 through 12.

Other agenda items include consideration of raising the hourly wage of educational technician I positions who have passed an ed tech test, appointments of several department chairs and members to the superintendent’s Advisory Board, and action on a revised Mountain Valley High School student handbook. The Policy Committee will meet one hour before the full board meeting to make final changes to the handbook.
