MEXICO – Selectmen are expected to set the tax rate for the coming year when they meet today.

They will also listen to a plan from Norbert Gallant to line the Mexico Greens with small granite stones naming the 1,500 to 2,000 men and women from Mexico who served in the military from World War I to the present day.

Last year’s tax rate was $28.80 per $1,000 valuation. Payment of half the property taxes is generally due in October. The second half is usually due in March. Last year, the town offered a 2 percent discount for those who paid their entire tax bill in October.

Gallant is a World War II veteran who spearheaded a successful project several years ago that resulted in a black-and-gray granite memorial to all Mexico veterans who were killed during World War I, World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam wars. That memorial is also at the Mexico Greens.

Gallant said the new project calls for using 16-by-8-by-4-inch gray granite stones. Former service people or their families would purchase the stones, then decide how much information, up to four lines, would go on the stones.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Calvin Lyons room of the town hall.
