RUMFORD – Two artists with very different themes are displaying their works in downtown Rumford.

For Connie Crosman, moving to Maine about six months ago from Washington, D.C., meant devoting more time to her art. She displayed her work in Maryland, but this is the first time in Rumford.

Displayed on the walls of the mezzanine of the ornate Hotel Harris are pictures of eagles, flowers and people.

“I’ve always been creative,” said Crosman, who with her husband, George, live in one of the apartments of the hotel. “I do crafts and paintings to express my feelings.”

Decorating the walls are oils, watercolors, pastels, charcoal pencil and pen and ink creations. An eagle lands on a tree in a pastel work. A small girl picks flowers in a oil composition. A nude is displayed on the wall behind Crosman’s work table.

Andrea MacDonald, manager of the hotel, said Crosman’s work will be on display for several weeks. She hopes to hold an open house and tea in the next week or two. Crosman’s works may be viewed during regular hotel hours.

Down Congress Street at Port-to-Port is another display of works quite different from those of Crosman’s.

Angel Draven has created series of oil and charcoal pictures depicting people she has known, as well as beings that some may consider other-worldly.

“These are portraits, dreams, visions. I am an artist because I have to be, because I see things that gnaw at me until I get it out,” she said.

Draven moved to Maine about two years ago from Massachusetts. She hopes to eventually join friends in California.

Her works are on display at the gift shop during regular business hours through July 4. From there, she hopes to display her creations at craft shows along the Maine coast.
