DIXFIELD – Visual aids were the cornerstone of three presentations by Dirigo High School students at Monday night’s SAD 21 Board of Directors’ meeting.

National Honor Society adviser and freshmen class homeroom teacher Beth Edwards and a group of students did an initial presentation on the DHS Freshmen Portfolio Program.

The students and Edwards explained a rubric for assessing portfolios, then identified how the documents would be used during the next school year.

Then the students, using poster boards and reports, shared with directors their experiences from the history class’ trip to Washington, D.C., during spring vacation.

Thirty students and 13 chaperones toured the nation’s capital from April 21 to 25.

Thomas Starratt, principal of T.W. Kelly Dirigo Middle School, said that in his opinion, the students’ presentation about the Korean War Memorial was very well done.

“The students went into great depth to research the memorial and draw a diagram of it,” Starratt said Tuesday afternoon. “The presentation showed the impact that the memorial had on them.”

Next up came sophomore class homeroom teacher Louise Chapman and a group of students, who, using photographs, poster board displays and a PowerPoint presentation, shared with directors highlights of the students’ first Community Service Day.

Projects included work at Ludden Memorial Library and cleanup labor around Peru’s fire station.

In other business, high school Athletic Director Jeff Turnbull advised board members about the need to schedule sporting competitions on holidays under emergency situations. Directors, however, wanted Turnbull to avoid scheduling games on holidays. But the board did acknowledge that scheduling games on some holidays can be unavoidable.

Board members also OK’d the SAD 21/Town of Dixfield Harlow Park cost-share agreement for use and maintenance of the town-owned park where the school athletic fields are located.

That ball’s now in the court of Dixfield selectmen, who are slated to meet at 4:30 p.m. Monday, June 9, in the town office.
