DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have been looking for consignment shops taking household items. I am interested in the area from Bethel to Lewiston-Auburn and surrounding area. I have checked several, and they have closed. — No Name, Norway

ANSWER: Sun Spots knows of no place where you can sell household items. Sales of many items have moved to Web sites such as craigslist and eBay. If you don’t have access to a computer, you can use a service that will sell online for you, place an ad in the Sun Journal or you can give things to local charities (a list was in Sun Spots Nov. 20).

For consignment sales, the closest to Lewiston that Sun Spots found was Oxford Depot, 11 Mechanic Falls Road, Oxford, ME 04270, 539-2202. Her commission for items under $30 is 40 percent; for items over $30 it’s 30 percent. She said that with high-ticket items she will negotiate a fee.

If you want to place an ad in the Sun Journal, the ad may be free. Here
are the rules: If a customer is selling a personal household item for
under $500, we will run a three-line ad for 10 days at no charge. Pets,
firewood, business ads, collectibles or antiques do not qualify.

Please don’t send items for sale to Sun Spots. She receives several each week but cannot print them.

ANSWER: See the following letter. From the high praise heaped upon Kate, Sun Spots suspects she has a good future making cats and dogs look their best.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: This is in response to the question about the New York Yankees not having their name on their Jerseys. I am a proud Yankee’s fan, and I heard during a game one time that Mr. Steinbrenner feels that there is no one player who wins the game. It takes a team, and that is why no player has his name on his back. It was said that Mr. Steinbrenner didn’t want all the credit going to one player. — No Name, No Town

DEAR READERS: Recently Sun Spots has been unable to print several letters because they came too late. The column is often written a week or two in advance, so keep that in mind for your upcoming event. Also, if you send your letter by traditional mail, that will slow the process down a bit more because Sun Spots does not pick up her mail every day.

This column is for you, our readers. It is for your questions and comments. There are only two rules: You must write to the column and sign your name (we won’t use it if you ask us not to). Please include your phone number. Letters will not be returned or answered by mail, and telephone calls will not be accepted. Your letters will appear as quickly as space allows. Address them to Sun Spots, P.O. Box 4400, Lewiston, ME 04243-4400. Inquiries can also be e-mailed to [email protected].
