FARMINGTON – Ronald Martz Jr. had his wheelchair back Thursday, the same day a story about his missing transportation appeared in the Sun Journal.
If the chair hadn’t been located, the University of Maine at Farmington said several people had called offering to give Martz a replacement wheelchair.
It had been missing since Martz and the wheelchair collided with a car Dec. 15 on Main Street in Farmington. The 37-year-old theater major was knocked unconscious and didn’t know what happened to his chair.
A Community Concepts Inc. worker called police Thursday to say a woman who was at the accident scene dropped the chair off at the agency’s adult day center on Pleasant Street the day of the crash but no one knew why.
Martz who was born with spina bifida had thought someone had stolen it. People had looked for the chair but couldn’t find it.
Martz was glad Thursday to know he was finally going to get it back, he said.
Lorna Smilek picked up the wheelchair, her husband Michael Smilek said. Martz is staying with the couple until next month when he transfers to University of Maine in Orono.
Martz also found out where his missing glasses were and expected to get those soon.
Tom Donaghue, spokesman for University of Maine at Farmington, said several people called Thursday offering a wheelchair to Martz, including Androscoggin Home Hospice and community members.
