CHESTERVILLE – A Farmington Falls man is accused of using a circular saw to cut up an ex-friend’s clothing over a debt of $8 and a 12-pack of beer.
Franklin County Sheriff’s Cpl. Nate Bean said he arrested Nicholas Osgood, 21, Sunday and charged him with assault on an officer, burglary and terrorizing.
Bean said he responded to a burglary complaint Sunday on Route 41 in Chesterville, where he interviewed Moses Rollins, who was taking care of the residence.
Bean said someone had broken into the residence and used a circular saw to cut up Rollins’ clothes while he was out, and put rubbing alcohol and cough syrup in Rollins’ 2-liter bottle of root beer.
The clothes were in an L.L. Bean duffel bag and the saw was used to cut up and shred the clothes in the bag, Bean said.
Rollins went to get a drink of root beer and noticed some root beer on the floor and that the plastic ring around the new bottle of root beer was broken, Bean said. Rollins also smelled the rubbing alcohol in the root beer, Bean said.
The corporal said he conducted an investigation and ended up going to 113 Clark Lane in Farmington Falls to find Osgood. During the interview, there was a scuffle and Osgood was handcuffed.
According to Bean, Osgood put his hand in a pocket of the fleece pullover he was wearing. Bean asked if Osgood had any weapons; Osgood said he didn’t.
But Osgood started moving his hand in his pocket, Bean said, so he grabbed Osgood’s hand and pulled it out of the pocket.
Although there was nothing in his hand, Bean said Osgood shoved him up against some boxes against the wall, and a struggle ensued.
After Osgood was taken to the Franklin County jail, he admitted to burglarizing the trailer, cutting up Rollins’ clothes and putting rubbing alcohol and cough syrup in Rollins’ root beer because he was mad at him because Rollins owed him $8 and a 12-pack of beer, Bean said.
He also said that before the burglary complaint, Osgood had called Rollins’ father and said that if he didn’t get the money and beer owed to him, he would kill his son and that his body would be found floating in the river.
Both crimes were reported at the same time, Bean said. The father didn’t tell the son about Osgood’s threat because he didn’t want his son to worry, Bean said.
Osgood posted $200 cash bail Sunday. He has a court date of Jan. 26 in Farmington.
