RANGELEY – A black bear and a former Rangeley hunting guide are the basis for a new book, “Sargent’s Bear,” by Bonnie B. Broadus. The author will sign copies of the book from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 7, at the Rangeley Library.
The true story is about a black bear named Blackie who returned year after year to feed and visit with builder and real estate agent Ronald Sargent in the backyard of his Rangeley home. The book contains pictures and tells about the bear’s intelligence, and of the friendship that developed between Sargent and the bear.
Sargent spent hours cooking and preparing for the nightly “bear show” held in his yard in the summer months, viewed from his living room window.
Local photographer Dave Karkos of Wilton created post cards of Sargent and Blackie, which were sold in several states.
