Livermore Falls, Jay, Livermore and Fayette can also recycle their Christmas trees.
JAY – The Recycling Facility and Transfer Station will be closed Christmas Day, Dec. 25. Thursday’s trash will be collected on Friday, Dec. 26. Thursday’s recyclables will be collected on Thursday, Jan. 8.
The facility will be open to the public the regular hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday during the holidays. For more information about the hours, people may phone 897-5552.
The Recycling Facility staff also is reminding residents of area towns that the Christmas season comes with a lot of recycling opportunities. Christmas wrapping paper and gift boxes will be one of the major items for recycling. People should remove all bows and ribbons from the paper and boxes before recycling. Any wrapping paper that has foil highlights cannot be recycled.
Wrapping paper and gift boxes are recycled as mixed paper at the Livermore, Livermore Falls and Jay Recycling Facility/Transfer Station. Residents from Fayette, Jay and Livermore Falls also may recycle these items with their curbside recycling collections.
The holiday season also leads to a tremendous amount of cardboard boxes, the staff notes. Recycle these boxes separately from other items. Cardboard boxes are considered to be ones that have corrugated ridges between the paper layers. Boxes with pictures or colors are also recycled as cardboard. These may also be taken to the Livermore, Livermore Falls and Jay Recycling Centers and will also be collected on the curbside recycling routes.
After the holiday, Christmas trees may be recycled. Livermore Falls residents should take the trees to the Livermore Falls Transfer Station; Jay, Livermore, and Fayette residents are to take Christmas trees to the Jay Transfer Station where they will be chipped for the compost pile. The trees are to be free of tinsel, decorations and other foreign materials. There is no curbside collection of Christmas trees in the local towns.
For other recycling questions, people should contact their local recycling facility/transfer station.
