The idea has worked well for other schools’ athletic programs.

JAY – The superintendent floated a concept Thursday that calls for a varsity program coordinator coach for each sport for grades seven to 12. Each coordinator would report to the assistant principal/athletic director.

After a teacher noted that fifth-graders are eligible to participate in sports, Superintendent Robert Wall said it could be changed to grades five through 12.

The proposal is only a concept, Wall told those who questioned the budget for the positions, existing athletic director’s duties, expanding such an idea to arts, and other issues.

Wall said the program has worked well in other school systems.

It’s a good way to make sure the program is connected, Wall said, and it provides coordination through the grades.

According to the description, the program coordinator would be the head varsity coach of their designated sport. Each coordinator/coach would be responsible for developing, promoting, organizing, supervising, instructing and evaluating their respective program in accordance with the mission, policies and procedures of the school.

Functions of the program coordinator/coach listed are:

• Responsible for the promotion and organization of all teams and coaches grades (five) seven through 12.

• Assist the athletic director in the supervision and evaluation of lower level coaches and programs.

• Arrange with the athletic director for the use of appropriate facilities, and will inform the athletic director of the condition/safety of equipment and facilities.

• Provide instruction and training necessary to develop players skills, techniques, and physical conditioning sufficient to enable each participant to compete safely and competently.

• Issue, inventory, maintain, collect and store all equipment utilized by the programs (five) seven through 12.

• Provide the athletic director with a list of all team members at least two weeks before the first scheduled contest.

• Responsible for collecting student-athletes’ medical records and parental permission forms prior to permitting a player to practice with the team.

• Adhere to and administer the policies and procedures set forth by the School Committee.

• Maintain the highest standards of conduct and sportsmanship and expect nothing less of the student-athletes that represent the school.

• Report all injuries to the athletic director within 24 hours of the incident.

• Build solid relationships with the student-athletes and parents who they serve.

• Participate in at least two opportunities for professional development each year.

• Plan and organize summer camps, summer leagues and/or clinics for student-athletes at all levels in order to promote growth within the program as a whole.

• Provide the athletic director and School Committee at the end of each season with a summary report of the program, including roster participants, result of all contests, equipment and uniform inventory, recommendations for future equipment purchases, recommendations for future development of program and self-evaluation.
