FARMINGTON – Some concerns have been brought to the town manager’s attention that the town’s skateboard ordinance is outdated.
Years ago the town had a skateboard park at Hippach Field to try to respond to the demand for kids wanting to skateboard.
But the kids grew up or moved away and lost interest in the park, and the town closed it down, Town Manager Richard Davis said.
The town’s ordinance then only allowed skateboarders to use the park or a certain route from schools, including the Ingall’s School – which is no longer used as a school – to get to the park at Hippach Field, Davis said.
He’ll have a preliminary discussion about a proposed, updated ordinance with selectmen at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Municipal Building.
The kids are feeling they’re getting picked on, Davis said, when police try to enforce the ordinance.
He’s proposing the new ordinance allow skateboarders to skateboard around town but has restrictions including busy streets such as Broadway and Main.
Also on Tuesday night, selectmen will discuss a proposal by the Downtown Business and Professional Association to install small U-shaped bike racks on sidewalks in the downtown area. The racks would need to be bolted to the sidewalk. Selectmen tabled action on the proposal last month.
Some concerns were raised about there being enough room on the sidewalks for the racks and also the town’s Public Works Department being responsible to take the bike racks up during winter for plowing.
Selectmen will also make appointments for the Budget Committee using the guidelines adopted in an ordinance last month.
